FREETOWN, June 3 – U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated career diplomat Daniel Travis to serve as the next ambassador to Sierra Leone, the White House said, with the appointment subject to Senate confirmation.
The nomination, submitted to the U.S. Senate this week, comes as Washington moves to fill a vacancy at its mission in Freetown following the departure of former ambassador Bryan David Hunt.

The U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone has since been led by Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey, overseeing diplomatic engagement and development programmes in the West African nation.
In a brief statement, the White House said Travis brings extensive experience in foreign service and African affairs, although it did not provide further details on his previous postings.
According to diplomatic sources, Travis is a seasoned Foreign Service officer who has served in multiple U.S. missions abroad, including assignments focused on political and economic affairs. His experience is expected to support Washington’s priorities in Sierra Leone, including democratic governance, economic cooperation and regional security.
The United States and Sierra Leone maintain longstanding ties, with Washington providing support in areas such as public health, education and institutional reform.
The embassy in Freetown said operations continue as normal, adding that no closures of U.S. diplomatic facilities in the country have been announced.
If confirmed, Travis will take up the post at a time when the United States is seeking to strengthen its engagement in West Africa amid growing geopolitical competition and security challenges in the region.
