Sierra Leone Paralympian George Wyndham, one of the country’s most decorated para-athletes, has died at the age of 36, according to local media reports.
Wyndham, a para table tennis player and disability rights advocate, represented Sierra Leone at several international competitions, including the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, where he was the country’s sole athlete and flag bearer.
Over the course of his career, he won 17 international medals, reports said, helping to raise the profile of Sierra Leone’s Paralympic programme and drawing rare global attention to athletes with disabilities in the West African nation.
Members of the sporting community paid tribute to Wyndham, describing his death as a major loss for para-sports in Sierra Leone. Many highlighted his role in mentoring younger athletes and advocating for greater inclusion and support for disability sport in a system constrained by limited resources and infrastructure.

Born in Kenema, Wyndham contracted polio as a child and used a wheelchair throughout his sporting career. He initially competed in athletics before switching to table tennis, where he became one of Africa’s leading competitors in his category.
Beyond competition, he was active in advocacy for people living with disabilities, often speaking about the challenges they face and encouraging participation in sport as a pathway to empowerment.

Sierra Leone’s Paralympic movement has long faced structural challenges, including limited funding, inadequate training facilities and low institutional support compared to mainstream sports. Athletes with disabilities often struggle to access equipment, coaching and consistent international exposure.
Despite these constraints, Wyndham was among a small group of athletes who kept Sierra Leone visible on the global Paralympic stage, where the country has typically fielded very small delegations. His participation in major events helped highlight both the promise of disability sport and the gaps in investment and policy support.
His death comes at a time when advocates are calling for greater inclusion and sustained funding for para-sports, raising concerns that his absence could slow momentum in efforts to expand opportunities for persons with disabilities in Sierra Leone.
