Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs said it recognizes only one official body representing the tourism sector, as it moved to clarify its position following reports of a newly formed industry group.

The ministry made the statement during a press conference held after news emerged of the creation of the Federation of All Tourism Associations (FATA), which has raised questions about representation within the sector.
Mohamed Jalloh, Director of Tourism, Travel and Exchange, said while citizens have the constitutional right to form associations, all tourism-related bodies must obtain formal approval from the ministry to be officially recognized.
He added that the ministry currently acknowledges the National Tourism Association as the legitimate representative body for the sector.
Jalloh said consultations are ongoing to establish a broader National Tourism Federation, which is expected to serve as a unified platform for engagement between government and industry stakeholders.
The government has in recent years stepped up efforts to promote tourism, culture and the creative industries as part of its economic diversification strategy, with officials highlighting initiatives aimed at creating jobs, particularly for young people.
Also speaking at the briefing, Fatmata Mida Carew, General Manager of the National Tourist Board, said the proposed federation would provide a structured mechanism for coordination once established.
The ministry said the press conference was intended to address concerns, promote unity within the sector and reinforce procedures for the recognition of tourism associations.
