(l– The Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL-SL) said it is closely monitoring recent developments surrounding the reported appointment of an “acting mayor” for the Freetown City Council, raising concerns about its legality.

In a press statement, the organisation said it had “carefully followed” the unfolding situation and stressed the need for strict adherence to the rule of law and established governance frameworks in the administration of the capital city.
CARL-SL noted that any action affecting the leadership of the council must be guided by Sierra Leone’s legal and constitutional provisions, warning against moves that could undermine democratic processes and institutional integrity.
The group called on all stakeholders, including political actors and public officials, to act within the confines of the law and prioritise the public interest in resolving the impasse.
The statement comes amid heightened political tensions in Freetown over leadership at the city council, following disputes about the legitimacy of appointing an acting mayor.
CARL-SL emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability and due process, urging authorities to ensure that any decisions taken are lawful and consistent with existing governance structures.
The organisation added that it would continue to engage and monitor the situation as it develops
