Sierra Leone’s newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has invited the leadership of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) to a formal dialogue, in a move seen as an effort to ease political tensions and build trust in the electoral process.

Alpha, who also serves as chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), said the meeting would take place at the commission’s headquarters in Freetown, though no date has been publicly confirmed.
“As the substantive Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, I am deeply committed to ensuring that the Commission remains a beacon of fairness and professionalism,” Alpha said in a statement.
The invitation comes amid ongoing concerns from the APC over electoral transparency and governance issues following recent political disputes in the West African nation.
Analysts say the proposed dialogue could provide an opportunity for both the electoral body and the opposition to address grievances and reinforce confidence in democratic institutions.
There was no immediate response from APC officials on whether they would accept the invitation.
The ECSL has in recent months faced increased scrutiny from opposition groups, with calls for reforms to strengthen credibility and independence ahead of future elections.
