Concern is mounting among journalists and members of the public in Sierra Leone over the continued detention of reporter Abdul Mento Kamara, as conflicting accounts emerge about the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

Kamara, described by colleagues as a practicing journalist and member of the Central Base Journalists group, was reportedly arrested near the Eastern Police Station in Freetown more than a week ago, according to media sources and associates.

Details of the arrest remain unclear. Some accounts circulating within media circles say Kamara was detained for allegedly obstructing police duties, while others claim he was arrested in connection with the possession of “kush,” a narcotic that has become a growing concern in the country.

Sources familiar with the incident said police officers confiscated Kamara’s mobile phone at the time of his arrest, leaving him unable to communicate with family members, colleagues or legal representatives.

Family members and associates say they have attempted to obtain clarification from police about the case, but information has been limited. Some officers contacted reportedly said they did not have direct knowledge of the matter.

Kamara is known among colleagues for reporting on community issues, including drug abuse and trafficking, and has previously highlighted the impact of narcotics on local communities.

Supporters say his reporting has often exposed alleged drug dealers, leading some to speculate that he may have faced disagreements with individuals involved in the drug trade.

Observers have called for the case to be handled with fairness and transparency, stressing that the rule of law requires that any allegations be properly investigated and that detainees be allowed due process.

Media advocates say the relationship between journalists and law enforcement is important for public accountability, noting that reporters play a key role in informing the public and scrutinizing institutions.

Calls are growing for authorities to provide clear information about Kamara’s arrest and ensure that legal procedures are followed.

Colleagues and supporters say they hope the circumstances surrounding his detention will soon be clarified through the appropriate legal channels
