President Julius Maada Bio has officially opened the Paul E. Farmer Maternal Centre of Excellence in Kono, marking a major milestone in the government’s commitment to improving maternal healthcare across Sierra Leone.
The new facility — named in honour of the late Dr. Paul E. Farmer, Co-Founder of Partners in Health (PIH) — features expanded bed capacity, state-of-the-art surgical theatres, adolescent-friendly services, and a neonatal intensive care unit.
The Centre represents a significant investment in the prevention of maternal deaths and the broader transformation of maternal and neonatal healthcare delivery in the country.
“We believe every woman deserves safe childbirth and every child a healthy start,” President Bio said during the opening ceremony, expressing gratitude to Partners in Health for leading the construction effort in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Build Health International.
The Paul E. Farmer Maternal Centre of Excellence stands as a lasting testament to Sierra Leone’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve health outcomes for women and children nationwide.
