In a bold move to combine national security with economic development, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has announced the creation of 17 job openings across multiple sectors under its newly established investment wing, Defence Enterprise Services (DES).
This initiative stems from President Julius Maada Bio’s vision to modernize the armed forces and expand their role beyond traditional military duties. As Commander-in-Chief and Chairman of the Defence Council, President Bio has emphasized the dual role of the military in safeguarding national security and contributing to socio-economic development, in line with the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6, Section 165).
DES, operating as the commercial arm of RSLAF, is designed to harness investment opportunities in key growth sectors including agriculture, energy, construction, finance, garment production, and pharmaceuticals. The aim is to generate revenue, address welfare concerns within the force, and support broader job creation nationwide.
Speaking on the development, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lieutenant-General Amara Idara Bangura—who also chairs the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff—underscored that RSLAF remains fully committed to its core security functions. However, he stressed that the investment push is equally vital for national growth and improving the lives of military personnel.
“The Armed Forces will continue to secure the nation, but we are also embracing our constitutional mandate to support national development. These investment initiatives will not only boost internal welfare but also create jobs and contribute to Sierra Leone’s economy,” Lt. Gen. Bangura said.
The 17 available positions—advertised in Independent Observer and Awareness Times newspapers—span 10 newly registered companies under DES and include roles such as:
1. Livestock Manager
