Kamarainba Mansaray Rallies Behind 45-Year-Old Woman Barred from WASSCE Exam

More News

Former presidential candidate and opposition leader Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has pledged moral and financial support to a 45-year-old woman who was reportedly removed from the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on the grounds of her age.

The woman, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was preparing to sit for her WASSCE exams when she was allegedly told she could not proceed due to being “too old” to take the test—a move that has sparked public debate and criticism across social media and civil society.

In a statement published on The Sierra Leone Monitor, Mansaray strongly condemned the incident, calling it an “unjust and discriminatory act” that undermines the right to education for all, regardless of age.

“There is no legal or moral basis to deny any citizen the right to pursue education and self-improvement,” Mansaray stated. “This woman has shown courage and determination to continue her education, and she should be celebrated—not punished.”

Mansaray, who recently resumed public life after years of legal battles and imprisonment, said he will ensure the woman receives full financial support to continue her academic journey. He also offered to sponsor legal assistance should she wish to challenge the decision in court.

The incident has drawn widespread public outrage and renewed calls for inclusive policies in the country’s education system. Critics argue that denying someone access to exams based on age is a violation of human rights and the spirit of lifelong learning.

Education authorities have yet to issue a formal statement addressing the situation.

As the country prepares for critical reforms in the education sector, advocates are urging the government to clarify policies around adult education and ensure that all citizens—regardless of age, gender, or background—can pursue formal learning without discrimination.
