By Mohamed Sankoh (One Drop) First things first. I never thought of writing a sequel to my One Dropian dropping of 23 January 2024 titled, “Moral Bankruptcy Contest: Abass Bundu Vs. Paran Tarawallie”. But Dr Abass Chernor Bundu’s address to “Honourable Members” last Thursday in the Well of Parliament, in which he explained “Parliament’s position to the nation”, has provokingly provoked today’s One Dropian dropping. In his address on Thursday 25 January 2024 the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Dr Abass Chernor Bundu, picked several bones with the mainstream and social media for what he supposedly posted on social media and also what the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) fed the mainstream media with in relation to what appears to be a “cold war” between him and the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Umar Paran Tarawallie. For starters, a social media blogger in a viral audio accuses Dr Abass Bundu of alleged sexual harassments of some female parliamentary staff and Members of Parliament while on official duties in and outside Sierra Leone. In reply to that and that of alleged grand corruption in the House, the Speaker of Parliament had reportedly noted that, “You cannot use the argument of morality to undercut the law when evidence abounds that legal abuse of office, conflict of interest, embezzlement, and corruption is rupturing the administration of Parliament”.From that statement, above, attributed to Dr Abass Bundu; two facts are established. First, the Speaker of Parliament stands accused of alleged immorality in the way and manner in which he conducts himself inside and outside the House of Parliament. Second, the Clerk of Parliament who is the administrative head is “rupturing” that vital section of the House with allegations of “abuse of office, conflict of interest, embezzlement, and corruption” for which he is now being investigated by the ACC. And the undercurrent in all of this is the seemingly “cold war” between the Speaker and the Clerk! Now coming to last Thursday’s address to “Honourable Members” of Parliament, Dr Abass Bundu makes a Freudian slip when he acknowledges “…a lapse in the dignity and decorum of Parliament”. And for that, he seems honest enough to have asked all MPs present that day that they “should all apologise to the people of [Sierra Leone] whose trust and confidence we bear and on whose behalf we act in this Well as their representatives…we want to take this opportunity to express our collective regret and to ask for their forgiveness; we promise that we shall never again commit the grievous mistakes of the recent past”.But while Mr Speaker appears to be showing collective remorse and making collective promise to “never again commit the grievous mistakes of the recent past” in one breath; in the same breath he appears to be dishonestly dishonest by engaging in what the British media will call “non-denial denial”. He is not denying the fact that the accusations against him and the Clerk are indicative of “a lapse in the dignity and decorum of Parliament”; yet he is also trying to deny some of the accusations by stating that, “a great deal of what has been said and written has been either misconceived or misunderstood.”Well, let’s forget about the “great deal”; what about the small deal which has already been said and written that is either not “misconceived or misunderstood”? Can Mr Speaker tell us some of the spicy details in those allegations which might have some elements of truth? He has already whetted our appetites by stating that he is now “a frail and faint shadow of his once youthful masculinity.” But what if that “youthful masculinity” playfully decides to resurface in the chambers of “a frail” Speaker who doesn’t need to “attempt any act of bravado” to activate seduction but muffled words, eye contacts, or jokingly caressing of enticing buttocks without consent?Mr Speaker’s insinuation that because he is “a frail and faint shadow of his once youthful masculinity”, so he cannot engage in any form of sexual harassment, appears to be fallaciously fallacious. Should I educate him that Jeffrey Edward Epstein, the American sex offender, was “a frail and faint shadow of his once youthful masculinity” at the time he was arrested, tried, and convicted for several sex offences? The point is: sexual harassments could take place without a man attempting “any act of bravado”!Another bone which Dr Abass Bundu picks with the media and which I also want to pick with him is where he notes that, “let it be stated here loud and clear that the Speaker and the Clerk of Parliament are not at loggerheads with each other, as some unscrupulous and frivolous media might want you to believe”. Here again, he is trying to engage in “non-denial denial”. According to a social media post, ascribed to him, he appears to have said that the allegations of sexual harassment against him are to divert public attention from the grave allegations against the Clerk of Parliament and his wife. So, those of us who are not dead to the King’s Language (Well, since the Queen of Britain is now dead; I will have to One Drop-nize that clichéd cliché with my own cliché.) will decode from that statement that there is no love lost between him and the Clerk of Parliament. But again, if I should try to be playfully playful; I would have wondered if Dr Abass Bundu could use such indicting adjectives against the Clerk when they are actually friendly friends (as he insinuates); what epithets would he have used if they are really at loggerheads with each other? I suspect he would have ‘Adebayor-nized’ (another One Dropian coinage) instead of allegedly using phrases like “legal abuse of office”, “conflict of interest”, “embezzlement, and corruption” which he reportedly said are “rupturing the administration of Parliament” of which his good friend with “youthful masculinity” is the Clerk!Even Dr Abass Bundu’s attempt at giving us a crash course on the different roles of the Speaker and the Clerk of Parliament is laughably laughable. It is, simply
THE QUEST FOR TITLES & GREATNESS
By PST. KUKU’S WEEKLY NUGGETS “You know that the rulers in this world Lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28 NLT The words of Jesus Christ from the above text rings true, and is relevant today just as it was back then when He first uttered them. While it’s true that “The elders who lead the church in a good way should receive double honor – in particular, those who do the work of counseling and teaching.” (1 Timothy 5:17 ERV), these same elders who are called to be servants/ ministers are NOT to “Lord it over their people”, but to follow the example of Christ who came to serve selflessly- even to the point of giving his life for the sheep.Unfortunately, in their quest to be “the first and greatest”, (some) leaders keep “flaunting their authority over those under them”. These leaders have taken over, and are devouring the very flock of God which they’re called to “feed and shepherd”. However, these things ought not be so. Therefore, as we go this week and call to mind the words of Jesus in our opening scripture, let’s also remember the warnings of the apostle Paul “…that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you…, not sparing the flock. Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.” Acts 20:29-30 NLT Don’t forget to smile coz it looks good on you.
Mallam O’s early Journey from Warima to Songo, from Muslim to Christian: Embracing Change in Sierra Leone*
Bongolistically by Mallam O. In the heart of Sierra Leone, in the small but bustling village of Warima, lived Mr. Alimamy Wusu Sankoh, a respected fuel tanker owner and the Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Motor Drivers Union. His son, Osman, a bright-eyed boy on the brink of his fifth birthday, became the catalyst for an educational revolution in Warima. The absence of a primary school in Warima and its neighboring villages posed a dilemma for Mr. Sankoh. With determination, he constructed the first primary school in Warima, ensuring that Osman and other children in nearby villages had access to education. The Church of God Primary School, a product of Mr. Sankoh’s friendship with the Secretary of a Christian mission Mr David Longstretch, became a beacon of learning. Mr. Sankoh’s generosity knew no bounds. He appealed to families in the smaller villages of Makabu, Maseri, Rogberay, and beyond, offering free education and uniforms to encourage enrollment. His fuel station and provision store, famously known for its ‘BUY YOUR COLD DRINKS HERE’ sign, became a community hub, frequented even by notable figures like his good fried the late President Siaka Stevens who would stop for a meal. The village would be crowded by motor cars on the president’s entourage. Osman’s early education was a blend of Islamic and Christian teachings. After school, he would join other pupils around a fireside, reciting verses from the Quran, though not fully grasping their meaning. As he grew, his intellectual curiosity led him to excel in academics, eventually passing the selective entrance exam for secondary school. To keep Osman grounded amidst the distractions of life in the capital city of Freetown where he had secured the Prince of Wales school, Mr. Sankoh collaborated with Koya Chiefdom authorities to establish the Tomlinson High School in Songo, closer to Waterloo about an hour’s drive from Warima. Osman, with admission number 003, embarked on a new educational journey, one that unexpectedly steered him towards a spiritual awakening. At Tomlinson, Osman began exploring the Bible, attending evening sessions that illuminated its teachings. His newfound fascination with Christianity led to a profound personal revelation during a weekend visit to Warima. He expressed a desire to embrace Christianity to his father. In a village where respect and understanding transcended religious differences, Mr. Sankoh convened a meeting with the elders. The decision was unanimous: Osman’s wish to convert to Christianity would be honored. It was a testament to the harmonious coexistence and religious tolerance in Sierra Leone. Osman, however, made a heartfelt choice to retain his name Osman, even as a Christian, a tribute to his beloved grandfather, Pa Wusu. His decision reflected a deep-rooted respect for his heritage and the values instilled by his Muslim family. The story of Osman, transitioning from Islam to Christianity even at his early age, is a beautiful narrative of religious tolerance and the freedom to choose one’s path in Sierra Leone. His journey symbolizes the nation’s embrace of diversity and respect for individual beliefs, a shining example of unity in diversity. Shouldn’t this be extended to ethnicity too?
The nation dies
The nation dieswhen basic needs become luxurieswhen education becomes a privilegewhen health is not a nation’s prioritywhen White Collar Crimes are soughtand are publicly defended, excusedare the shortcuts to becoming affluent, the shortcuts to grabbing state powerbut offences of the suffering massesare classified as high state corruptionand the offenders publicly shamed –the nation suffers an abortive death. Still, the nation dieswhen politics becomes a professionand not a service to the nation, peoplewhen journalists become accomplicesof the government, their propagandistswhen justice becomes an extensionof the executive, not a separate armwhen becoming an MP is to representoneself and loved ones, not the peoplewhen peace, not equal rights, is whatpoliticians preach after failing people –the nation is brutally assassinated. And then the nation dieswhen a people are fragmentedwhen fragmented fragmentsof the fragments from whichother fragments are fragmentedwhich make other fragmentsfrom which further fragmentswill be fragmentedly fragmentedfrom the original fragments –one fragment becomes so powerfulthen fragments the other fragments –the nation is finally entombed.
