By Feima Sesay Alladinor Francess Koroma, a Student from Njala University has on Thursday 10th August drag to court before magistrate Mark Ngegba of Pademba road court No1 for allegedly defrauding two women of NLE 82,500/00 for visa to Canada. The accused persons Josephine Bintu Kosia and Fanta Manga were arraigned on twelve counts charges ranging from conspiracy to defraud contrary to law, obtaining money by false pretences contrary to section 32 1 of the larceny Act 1916, causing money to be paid and other related matter all contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone Accord to the charges,the accused persons on a date unknown between November 2022 to April 2023, in Freetown conspired together with other person’s unknown and obtained from Alladinor Francess Koroma, Violet Jeneba Johnson, Abdul Kowa, Christina Mannah the total sum of NLE 82,500/00 with the pretext that, they will facilitate their traveling to Canada knowing same to be false. The witness led in evidence by ASP Ibrahim S Mansaray said she is a student of Njala University and she recalled diverse dates between November 2022 to April 2023. She said on the said dates, she received a called from her elder brother informing her about a traveling agency to London, upon receipt of the information, she received telephone call from the first accused inorder to met her at Dwazark . “The following day I went to meet with the first accused at Dwazark , she to me to give a deposit of 10 million so that she could facilitate the proced and that o should pay the remaining give million in two days”, she narrates. On the following day, she said she contacted her sister in America who gave her the balance five million Leones, adding that upon receipt of the money, she said took it to the first accused who promise to issues a receipt later to her elder brother. According to the witness, the accused conducted an interview for her but said during the process she notices that the question they asked her does not relate to the traveling process. She said they promised to conduct a trained for her and they did for three month. The witness said she brought three of her friends on the request of the accused and they also paid their money. She said they took photos during the training. The said photos were produced and tendered in court as evidence against the accused persons. Since then, neither her nor her friends have traveled or received their monies. During Cross examination by defense lawyer Chernor Kamara the witness said she came to know the accused in this matter and said she does not know the procedures to obtain a Visa. When she was asked whether a receipt was issued to her she said no but the accused promised to give her elder brother the receipt. Defense counsel applied for bail on their behalf pursuant to section 79 of the criminal procedure Act 1965. Bail was refused by magistrate Mark Ngegba and the matter adjourned to the 17th August 2023.
Business Man Drag to Court for Visa Fraud
By Feima Sesay Amadu Sesay a business man was on Wednesday 9th August 2023, drag to court before Magistrate Mark Ngegba of Pademba road court No1 over an alleged traveling scam to Italy. The accused arraigned on four counts charges ranging from Conspiracy to defraud contrary to law, obtaining money by false pretences contrary to section 32(1) of the larceny Act 1916. According to the charge the accused on a date unknown between 1st April to 30th April 2023, at No 20 Hill Cut road G-Gate Freetown with intent to defraud obtained the sum of NLE 10,600 from Saio Kamara by falsely pretending that he will facilitate her traveling from Sierra Leone to Italy knowing same to be false. The police further alleged that the accused on the said date with intent to defraud obtained the sum of NLE 10,600 from Saio Kamara by falsely pretending that he will facilitate the traveling of her brother Abu bakarr Kamara and nephew Dauda Sama Kargbo from Sierra Leone to Italy knowing same to be false. Count four added that the accused on the same date and place with intent to defraud obtained from Saio Kamara the sum of NLE 4, 500 by falsely pretending that he will facilitate the traveling of her sister Hawanatu Bah from Sierra Leone to Italy knowing same to be false. When the charges were read and explain to him, he pleaded not guilty. The police prosecutor PC 17649 Kargbo B informed the court that his witness is present and ready to proceed with the matter. Lawyer Gabba applied for bail on behalf of the accused pursuant to section 79 sub sections 3 of the criminal procedure Act 1965. He said that the accused will not in any way jump bail or interfere with the prosecution witnesses, adding he has just lost his child and that the child has not been buried because due to his detention. The prosecutor in reply opposed to bail on the grounds that the accused has three other files for the same offense. Magistrate Ngegba however granted the accused bail in the sum of two hundred thousand new Leones and two sureties in like sum that must be gainfully employed with proof of employment. The matter was adjourned to 16 August 2023 for further hearing.

Police arrest 17 By Mustapha Dumbuya The Inspector General of Sierra Leone Police, William Fayia Sellu has informed journalists that the Sierra Leone Police has arrested 17 suspects who are currently in detention helping the Police for investigation. The IGP made this statement during a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Freetown. He explained that the apprehended individuals include a total of 17 suspects, comprising 8 middle-level officers, 6 non-commissioned officers, 2 police officers, 1 retired police superintendent, and 2 civilians. IGP Sellu further disclosed that several other people suspected of involvement in the alleged plots were on the run and that the police were pursuing them. He said the SLP was working with its neighboring countries and other international partners, through the International Police Organization (Interpol) to secure the arrest of those at large. He also said that they have beefed up security at the country’s borders with its neighbours. “No matter where you are, as long as that country is part of Interpol, we will get you,” Sellu said. In his final statement, William Fayia Sellu urged the public to remain vigilant and trust in law enforcement agencies as they work diligently to ensure the safety and security of Sierra Leone will not jeopardize.
Bo Rangers to Clash with Side Coton FC Benin
By Alusine Fullah Bo Rangers Football Club is through to the West Africa Champions Cup Final and they will clash with Benin side Coton Football Club for the West African Trophy. Bo Rangers qualify for the finals following their 2-0 victory over ASM Sangaredi in Guinea. Two Goals from Ibrahim Turay and Amadu Mansarah were enough for the Rangers to Proceed to the Final of the Competition. Eight clubs from across West Africa took part in the tournament scheduled for 7th-13th August. Other teams that participated in the tournament are L’as Real BKO FC of Mali, Coton FC of Benin, Bo Rangers of Sierra Leone, Horoya AC, Hafia FC, Milo FC and Soar AC of Guinea, and ASM Sangaredi. It is evident that Bo Rangers is on top of situation for this competition. Very recently, Bo Rangers knocked out Guinean heavyweight club, AC Horoya on penalties after playing to 1-1 draw.
60 Women Initiated Without Mutilation ‘Bondo Society’
By Alusine Fullah Sixty Sierra Leonean women have successfully passed into womanhood through the Bondo society without genital mutilation at the Rosenbgeh village, Koya chiefdom, Port Loko district. The said initiates include lactating mothers and students between the ages of 19 and 33 years. This has also been emerged as the third batch of women who have gone through the Bondo in Sierra Leone without cutting. The Bondo used to be a secret society in Sierra Leone when women and young girls had to undergo through Mutilation (FGM). The Society, which is more like a sisterhood aims to prepare young women for adulthood, their traditional role as housewife, spouse and mother, and recognizes their move towards maturity and puberty. It is regarded as necessary by many communities in Sierra Leone, and young women who go through the Bondo initiation are celebrated and accorded a high social status. Some strong women in Sierra Leone believe that the practice is harmful to women’s Health especially in giving birth. According to research carried a lot of women faced so many constraints during childbirth due to the absence of their clits which is supposed to help them deliver safely. Because of the suffering and psychological trauma as a result this inhuman practice, The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, Ministry Health and Sanitation and with Social Welfare Ministry team up to end such practice and ensure women to go through the process without spilling blood. Going through Bondo without harming or blood spill is a demonstration and a focus on protecting women and girls in Sierra Leone. The practice of Bondo society in Sierra Leone has been in existence since colonial days and it is part of our society that portrays Sierra Leone’s culture. It is no doubt that the government of Sierra Leone has been team up with Human Right Organizations to stop the Mutilation which is against individual’s Human right. In Sierra Leone “Sowas” have been arrested and some were charged to Court for forcefully initiated children or women with their consent.
19-Year Old Sentenced to 15-Years Imprisonment
By Alusine Fullah Justice Alhaji Momoh-Jah Stevens has sentenced a 19-year old man; Abu Bakarr Bundu has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. He was found guilty of sexually penetrating a 12-year-old pupil. He appeared before the court on a two counts indictment of sexual penetration contrary to Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Act 2012, Act No. 12 of 2012, as repealed and replaced by Section 4 (a) (ii) of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2019, Act No. 8 of 2019. The State Prosecutor, Paius Sesay had alleged that the accused has on the 29th January, 2022 in Freetown, sexually penetrated a child. The state earlier made an application upon the accused arraignment for the accused to be tried by a judge alone instead of a judge and a jury. Justice Momoh Jah Stevens granted the said application. The convict denied the allegation upon his arraignment and the state prosecutor led in evidence and a number of witnesses including the victim in support of their case. In his judgment, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens said that the accused tried to make an allegation against the detective police when he read his confessional statement in court that, the officer forced him to confess to the crime. Justice Momoh Jah Stevens cautioned the accused on his choice of words that he was not forced to do anything; rather he made a confessional statement to the officer. Justice Stevens sentenced the accused person to 15 years imprisonment.
ACC Boss Presents (OL) Ten Billion Leones to H.E Bio

Dr. Julius Maada Bio as part of its non-conviction based asset recovery approach. The presentation ceremony, marked by its importance, unfolded at the State House in Freetown. ACC Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala Esq. emphasized that their robust anti-corruption strategy encompasses asset recovery alongside prosecution, prevention, and public education. He stated, “In Africa, we are a leading example in the way to fight corruption and I am proud to say many other countries are following and learning from us.” The funds handed over are specifically derived from non-conviction-based asset recovery efforts, distinct from other recoveries made for Government agencies, court-imposed fines, and assets like properties, laptops, and vehicles. President Bio acknowledged the ACC’s vigilant efforts in this challenging endeavor, commending them for their dedication. He underscored his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption, highlighting substantial recoveries and the nation’s unprecedented progress in transparency indexes over the past five years. Meanwhile, the President encouraged the ACC Team to remain resolute as they continue their pursuit of combating corruption within the country. In another development, the ACC Commissioner presented the Commission’s 2022 Annual Report to President Bio, as mandated by Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008, amended in 2019. This comprehensive report details the Commission’s activities, significant accomplishments, and the hurdles encountered in the battle against corruption throughout 2022. The fight against corruption since the arrival of the New Direction government has been fierce and intensive. In line with the foregoing, in 2019 Sierra Leone was ranked 3rd out of 35 African countries surveyed on Government’s effectiveness in the fight against corruption. The report was launched in Sierra Leone on 11th July, 2019 by the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR). However, corruption has threatened sustainable economic development, ethnics’ values and justice; it has destabilized our society and endangered the rule of law. Indeed, since independence, corruption has been pernicious in Sierra Leone. As corruption continues to fly high in all MDAs, suffering/ poverty continues to bite deep on the people.
