By: Austine Luseni Communications Specialist Ministry of Energy Contact: 077377042/034157390 Water Quay, Cline Town, Freetown, Monday 22 June ,2020——— Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay has officially received the first shipment of wooden poles meant for the Bo-Kenema Network Rehabilitation and Expansion Project. A consignment of sixteen (16) containers with three thousand and fifty poles was received and would be transported to Bo and Kenema on Tuesday 23rd June. Making a brief statement at the quay, Mr. Sesay said that the poles were meant for a mega energy project for the southeastern cities of Bo and Kenema, with respect to the rehabilitation and expansion of networks. The minister pointed out that the ministry was expecting the arrival of additional consignments in the next couple of weeks and months. Mr. Sesay gave a brief background of the project, citing that they as a ministry were constrained to provide reliable and quality electricity for Bo and Kenema because of the old, poor and disheveled nature of the transmission and distribution systems which they inherited. He added that the African Development Bank, DFID and the Government of Sierra Leone were co-funding the project. Commenting on the project, Mr Sesay assured that the whole network and distribution systems in the two cities would be overhauled, with rickety and damaged wooden poles worn out wires and transformers replaced. He also assured that the interconnection between the two cities would be done, with major towns along the highway of the two cities also benefiting from the electricity supply. General Project Coordinator, Energy Sector Utility Reform Project, ESURP, Dr. Ing. Edmond Wuseni said that the consignment had been officially cleared and symbolically received, noting that on Tuesday the 16 fleets of containers would head for Bo and Kenema, with the minister of energy officially receiving and presenting them on Wednesday. Ing. Wuseni added that some of the poles from the eight containers meant for Bo would be displayed at the Bo Coronation Field for all to see, as a way of instilling hope and confidence in the people, while the Bo Airstrip would be used to pack the poles. The other eight containers, according to the engineer, would containerized at the Kenema Airstrip. Ing. Wuseni went further to state that consignments would be coming in on a weekly basis, adding that four key items constitute the overall consignment for the project: some 16 thousand poles, cables, power transformers, and auxiliaries while stressing that each time the items arrived, the minister would verify to ascertain whether they fit into the contract specifications. Ing. Wuseni also stated that new areas in Bo and Kenema would have the opportunity of being connected to the grid, after which an operation involving a complete overhaul of the old network system would be undertaken. It is worthy of note that the Bo-Kenema Network Rehabilitation and Expansion Project would see the total rehabilitation of the four feeders in Bo and the three in Kenema, and would also see the electrification of four major chiefdoms along the highway of the two cities. Even though the completion time is said to be within sixteen months , many are hoping that with the commitment and energy shown by the minister and his team, the two cities are on course to enjoy reliable electricity well ahead of that time.

The Ambassador told the victims about the danger engendered by this act where victims were taken to an unknown destination allowing the perpetrators to make huge gains on their vulnerabilities. “I admonish you to resist the temptation of people going around promising you heaven on earth by taking you to countries they have no control over”. This he said was a result of the good bilateral relations between the two countries under the astute leadership of President Julius Maada Bio. “President Bio is doing everything humanly possible to make Sierra Leone attractive to prevent our youth from embarking on such a dangerous enterprise. The President has taken the giant strides to minimize corruption, pay attention to human capital development, indiscipline, and attract investment thereby creating jobs”. He said. Leicester Road Community needs urgent help.
By Ezekiel Dumbuya Leicester Road Community is one of the most deprived communities in constituency 124, ward 429 in the western area urban district of Freetown. The community has a population of over Nine Hundred Thousand (900,000) people that are contributing to the developmental process of Sierra Leone, but today the community has lost most of its basic amenities that ease the livelihood of humans. One of the facilities that a community should have is a police station or a police post, as at present there is no police post/station in the Leicester road community. Considering the rampant thefts, robberies and cliques activities in the community, the safety of residents is at stake in that community and residents in the community told this reporter that they are concerned and worried about the lack of police presence in their community and called on the Sierra Leone Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to help them get a police post. Lack of a water facility in the community is also the biggest problem affecting the people in the community. This has forced parents to send their children to fetch water at odd hours and this has increased the rate of teenage pregnancy in the community. Therefore, the Guma valley water company (GVWC) through the government of Sierra Leone needs to address the issue of water shortage in the community and to put proper measures in place for the hillside communities to have water facilities as soon as possible. Health care facilities are a major problem in the Leicester road community, people in that community, especially pregnant women and lactating mothers are suffering to get good health care. There is an urgent need from the government to help this community. Youths in the community started a project to improve the construction of roads in the community, but they had stopped because there was no support from the government or people as a sign of motivation. Quite recently the Freetown City Council (FCC) with development partners started a drainage system from Leicester road community to Gloucester and its environs. This has made residents applaud the Mayor for taking such development in their community.
BOOK REVIEW- A PLACE IN THE SUN – THE BOOK TO WATCH
Emmanuel Yawe A Place in the Sun is a racy novel, rich in history and suspense. Written by Kola King a veteran journalist, it is a love story based in the fictional country of Songha which in reality looks like life in the early days of colonial conquest in Northern Nigeria where the author hails from. Beginning from Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, many fictional works have been done about life in Nigeria and Africa in this period. A Place in the Sun stands out of the crowd not only because it is one of the few written about Northern Nigeria in this period but because it is a beautifully crafted work of art, mixed with history and culture. The intriguing thing about it is the ability of the author to hold the reader spellbound and educate him until he gets to page 250 – the last. The first edition of the book which was recently released by Verity Publishers of Pretoria in South Africa comes in paperback and eBook form. The print work is excellent thus reducing the stress of the reader as he goes through the forty-two chapters of the novel. It begins with the birth of Zakka – the main character in the story – in Tekota at the dawn of the European colonization of Songhaland. He thus grew up under the shadow of colonial rule in the land described by the author as “bright with sunshine which shone all year round… Wide, vast and extensive, the land was lush and fertile…Because of its salubrious weather and fertile land, Songhaland was as though paradise in the tropics.” The people of Songhaland were “renowned for their hospitality, warmth, and friendliness.” The author also goes further to describe them as “great farmers and intrepid hunters; fishermen, swift with their nets and skillful with canoeing.” They are also said to be “giant men, bold and unafraid warriors” who had conquered and subdued their neighbors. Thus through the simple but captivating and effective choice of words, Kola King is able to get the reader interested in the land and the people that make the story. The story itself looks real and though full of suspense, intrigue, and sometimes tragedy, the reader is not subjected to sensation an overdramatization. Once in a while, the author falls back on history and this helps to remind the reader that this is a real-world, real-life situation. For a writer who is making his debut in fictional writing, A Place in the Sun will certainly give the author a place under the sun where there is a rather large crowd of writers. The novel is about the love story of Zakka, a brilliant young lad from Tekota who excels in his studies at primary school in his home village travels to the big town of Kartadu for his training at a Teachers College and as result of his demonstrated brilliance is employed immediately on graduation to be an auxiliary teacher in the same school. His diligence at work and exemplary character bring him to the attention of the Colonial Education Secretary who orders his employment at the head office of the regional headquarters of the education department on the completion of his one year stint as an auxiliary teacher. Zakka falls in love with Matta, a girl from Tekota who has had a turbulent love life. Impregnated by her teacher, a bonhomie drunkard teacher by the name Gora at a tender age, Matta was given out in marriage at that age. Tragically, the marriage was bedeviled with a series of misfortunes. There was a drought in the land as a result of which poverty prevailed, bringing starvation and death in the land. The hard times brought strife in the relationship of the newly married Gora and Matta. Thus Gora who had shown signs of improvement from his carefree life of alcoholism relapsed back to his bad old ways. The pregnancy itself turned out to be another disaster for it lasted for a whole twelve months at the end of which the child is stillborn. These disasters ended with Matta calling it quits with the marriage. Meanwhile, the brilliant Zakka has made his forays into the world beyond Tekota to the Teachers Training College at Kartadu where he has made academic waves. Eventually, Matta pulls herself out of the setbacks of her life and returns to complete her primary education. She joins Zakka at Kartadu even though in a different school, a teacher’s college for girls. The two meet and gradually a love relationship builds up. Meanwhile, the drunken philanderer Gora has also gotten out of his stupor. Dismissed from his teaching job because of excessive alcoholism, he flees Tekota and after a long spell of hard times in Kartadu, he drops his drinking habits and gets a job at the railways. A new improved Gora gets rapid promotion there and comes back to claim his long lost wife – Matta. The story becomes complicated. Zakka cannot marry Matta because the dowry paid by Gora has not been returned and therefore by tradition Matta is still his wife. Zakka himself is up against his father who has found a fresh new wife for him and does not want to hear that his son with such a bright future is going to marry a second-hand woman with such a sordid history Matta. The story ends tragically when Gora, ever insistent on reclaiming his wife is on his way to Tekota village, and then gets drowned in a canoe mishap. The coast thus becomes clear for the two love birds – Zakka and Matta to have their way. Beyond the excellent print and beautiful prose, A Place in the Sun is a book of history. It documents the contradictions of a colonized African society – the challenges of modernity against tradition. It is a recommended text to adults because it entertains and enthralls, but it is also good for young African students who need it to know where

Energy Minister Presents a Brand New 250kva Transformer to the Kingharman Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Medical Superintendent Says the Transformer will Improve the Quality of Service at the Hospital
By: Austine Luseni Communications Specialist Ministry of Energy Contact: 077377042/034157390 As part of the Government’s commitment to preventing infant and maternal mortality through the provision of essential support and facilities to hospitals, minister of energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay has presented a brand new 250kva transformer to the Kingharman Road Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Freetown. Making a brief statement at the ceremony, Mr Sesay said that he was reminded about the poor electricity facility at the center in October last year, when he accompanied the President to the hospital on the occasion of the formal commissioning of the facility. Mr. Sesay noted that because President Maada Bio was committed to improving the lives of citizens and in ensuring the provision of essential facilities to Government-owned healthcare centers, he was there to answer the call of the President as well as to respond to the passionate appeal of the hospital. The remarkably foresighted and result-oriented minister went further to say that the hospital had experienced serious challenges with electricity because it was directly connected to a community grid-a situation which led to issues of low voltages, partial or total outages, malfunctioning of critical medical equipment and other instances of inconvenience to staff and patients. He averred that the new transformer would be exclusively dedicated to serving the electricity needs of the hospital, while also assuring that a team of engineers and technicians would be dispatched to do the necessary connections ahead of his visit and that of the minister of health on Monday for the formal commissioning of the transformer. Deputy Director-General, EDSA, Mr. Nyama said that the hospital had grown in capacity, stature, and responsibility, with a corresponding need for the use of advanced medical equipment in the admission and treatment of patients. He added that the hospital was therefore in urgent need of a transformer that would improve the quality of electricity at the center so as to help save precious lives. He concluded by saying that the transformer would be a catalyst in the operations of the hospital as it would have a massive impact on service delivery. While expressing her joy and relief, Medical Superintendent, Kingharman Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Dr. Sarah Conteh said the management and staff of the hospital were more than delighted to see their long-term dream come true. Dr. Conteh noted that those heavy electrically powered medical equipment like Incubators, Oxygen Concentrators, and Air Conditioners which the facility was heavily constrained in using would now be fully utilized to save lives. She assured that she would do everything possible to protect the transformer and ensure improvement in the quality of service to patients. The minister of energy is making energy positively impact every sector of the society, and he has promised not to rest until the energy revolutionization dream of the President was achieved.
